The story of why I picked up machine learning is one of growth. In 2015, I completed a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering which landed me the role of Remote Operation and Control Engineer.

During my time there, I saw how digitalization became the driving force for change in industry. Data that was once stored statically in piles of paper is now available at a click across many platforms, ready to drive actions and decision-making. With the guidance of several mentors, I started transitioning to tech in my spare time. It began with online courses on modern web development then applying what I learned through side projects and hackathons.

The day that marks my completion of my course at Forward School.
"Data that was once stored statically in piles of paper is now available at a click across many platforms. So with the guidance of several mentors, I started transitioning to tech in my spare time."

However, there is only so much people can do by themselves with the sea of data generated each day. The last 5 years saw artificial Intelligence emerge into the mainstream. Suddenly, tasks once considered the sole domain of human intelligence can be replicated by computers on a large scale. This led to me  joining Forward School’s Applied Deep Learning Bootcamp which centers on DeepLearning4J.

Over the course of 2 months, I obtained a solid foundation in machine learning. I was taught the basics then applied them immediately in exercises. These covered object detection, image recognition, classification, and transfer learning. The instructors were helpful and gave much support when I built my first projects. As for DeepLearning4J itself, what attracted me was the fact it is written in Java. This allows it to  fit into the existing enterprise software ecosystem which eases their adoption of machine learning.
